It’s a fact of life that over time our homes accumulate clutter, little odds and ends that we keep around “just in case” or never got around to throwing away. It can happen gradually, or all at once after a big life change like moving or downsizing. But at some point, it’s time to declutter. Here are some tips to help you get started on your junk removal journey.
1. Start small. Decluttering can be overwhelming if you try to tackle your whole house at once. Instead, start with one area – a closet, a drawer, a shelf – and work through it methodically. Once you’ve finished that one area, move on to the next.
2. Use the “one-year” rule. As you go through each item, ask yourself: have I used this in the past year? If not, it’s probably safe to get rid of it. Of course, there are exceptions – sentimental items or seasonal decorations, for example – but as a general rule, if you haven’t used it in a year, you probably won’t.
3. Get rid of duplicates. How many spatulas or coffee mugs do you really need? Keep one or two of each item that you use regularly, and donate the rest.
4. Create piles. As you sort through your things, create three piles: keep, donate, and throw away. Be honest with yourself about what’s truly useful or meaningful, and what’s just taking up space.
5. Consider the “one in, one out” rule. Once you’ve decluttered, try to be mindful of what you bring into your home. For every new item you buy, consider getting rid of one that no longer serves a purpose.
6. Recycle or repurpose what you can. Some items may not be useful to you, but could be to someone else. Consider donating gently-used clothes and household items to a local charity. Old newspapers and magazines can be recycled. You might even be able to repurpose something – an old ladder can make a unique new bookshelf, for example.
Decluttering isn’t always easy, but it can be incredibly freeing. By letting go of the things that no longer serve a purpose, you’re making space for the things that truly matter. Use these tips to get started on your junk removal journey, and enjoy the benefits of a more clean and organized home.
